Heritage Day saw a vibrant boating extravaganza unfold along the Vaal River as hundreds of vessel owners gathered for the official opening of the 2026 inland boating season.
The annual event, centered around Stonehaven on Vaal in Vanderbijlpark, serves as the traditional launch of the summer water-sports and leisure season for Gauteng and Free State boating enthusiasts. Drawing hundreds of craft—ranging from luxury river cruisers and powerboats to jet skis and classic bowriders—the annual mass flotilla highlights the vital economic and recreational role played by South Africa’s inland waterways.
Boats of all shapes and sizes marked the occasion in a colourful procession, taking full advantage of clear skies and mild spring weather.
“What a proudly South African day! We couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather,” said Rosemary Anderson, owner of Stonehaven on Vaal, in a report published by Vaalweekblad. “From the hundreds of boats on the water to the incredible community spirit, everything came together beautifully. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s opening another truly memorable occasion.”
With braais lit along the banks, floating live music, and festive water displays, the celebration showcased the strong community spirit driving the region’s inland marine sector. As one social media commentator summed it up: “It was an epic day.”
