It was worth the few extra grey hairs on his head. Kay Oldenburg finally has a new boatbuilding yard, and Voyage Yachts is ready for a new era after 30 years of catamaran production in Paarden Island. For the past 18 months the award-winning company has operated under a cloud of uncertainty in a facility recently bought by neighbours Robertson and Caine, which needed the space to expand.

Fortunately Oldenburg and his team is now up-and-running in a new facility in Montague Gardens, no longer hemmed in and free to expand its own footprint. “Voyage Yachts was forced to find a new premises due to circumstances outside of our control,” Oldenburg told SABBEX. “These circumstances turned out to be a blessing for Voyage yachts as we have now moved into a much better facility, where we can expand our operation and production in the years to come.”

The yard will hit the ground running, with four catamarans currently under construction, two of them the new 510 design. “Stress has a new meaning for me these days,” said Oldenburg. “If I think I have now a minute to myself, something else presents itself.”

The first 510 is due to be launched in July next year, by which time Oldenburg hopes to see a rebound in the luxury voyaging catamaran market.
