South African naval design firm, KND Naval Design, has made waves on the global stage with its innovative rescue craft recently showcased at a crisis simulation exercise in Singapore. Commissioned by Changi Airport Group (CAG), the vessels demonstrate the cutting-edge ingenuity that KND brings to the maritime rescue and firefighting sectors.
The three new vessels—a Command Craft, a Fast Craft, and a Landing Craft—were designed by KND Naval design to replace aging models, enhancing CAG’s emergency response capabilities. Built in Singapore to KND’s exacting standards, the vessels boast advanced multipurpose features, from high-speed operations to sophisticated firefighting and rescue capabilities.
At the heart of these designs is a focus on efficiency and innovation. Equipped with state-of-the-art navigation systems and life raft space for up to 120 individuals, the vessels are prepared to handle large-scale emergencies. A standout feature is the automated retrieval system, which functions like a conveyor belt to streamline the recovery of accident victims from the water—an improvement over traditional manual retrieval methods.
The vessels’ performance is equally impressive, with top speeds reaching 40 knots—double that of the previous generation. Designed for versatility, the Landing Craft can even operate in challenging conditions, including beach landings, further enhancing its utility for casualty management and firefighting.
The Command Craft serves as the operational hub, coordinating rescue efforts with improved communication systems and accommodating up to 12 passengers. The Fast Craft specializes in rapid response, firefighting, and water surface rescues, with a capacity for 19 passengers. Meanwhile, the Landing Craft offers unparalleled flexibility, replacing traditional hovercraft with the ability to carry 50 passengers while performing multiple rescue and firefighting functions.
This achievement marks another milestone for KND Naval Design, a firm renowned for its innovation in the maritime sector. With its headquarters in South Africa, KND has consistently demonstrated its expertise in crafting high-performance vessels for demanding operations. The project highlights the global appeal of South African engineering excellence and reinforces KND’s reputation as a leader in naval architecture.
By contributing to Changi Airport’s enhanced emergency preparedness, KND has not only showcased its world-class design capabilities but also cemented its position as a key player in international maritime safety.
