The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) recently joined forces with the Department of Transport in Durban to fast-track updates to the country’s marine pollution laws. The upcoming regulations will directly impact how local boatbuilders, commercial operators, and recreational boaters operate in South African waters.
The session focused heavily on creating enforceable enforcement mechanisms for two critical pieces of legislation: the Marine Oil Pollution Act and the Marine Pollution Amendment Act. There were also technical breakaway sessions targeting MARPOL Annex IV (Sewage from ships) and Annex VI (Air pollution and emissions from ships).
As global export markets—particularly in Europe and the Americas—demand stricter environmental compliance, these looming domestic regulations have vital relevance for South African builders, specifically regarding their onboard waste systems and propulsion engineering.
The SAMSA delegation included executive head of policy Boetse Ramahlo, acting COO Thandimfundo Mehlo, and ship registrar Lufuno Mudau, alongside several regional port captains.
