With Nigeria and now Angola both hosting separate rounds of this year’s E1 series, Cape Town would seem like the logical next step for the hugely popular event, which takes place in multiple host cities during the course of the year.

The event is synonymous with celebrity, due to high profile team owners, among them soccer icon Didier Drogba, tennis ace Rafael Nadal, and Hollywood star Will Smith.

Smith travelled to Luanda last month to confirm the City’s status as E1 host, while Lagos will play host in October for a second time.

“Africa has always embodied passion and relentless drive,” Smith said of Angola’s appointment as an E1 series host. “E1 in Angola is more than a moment; it’s a movement. This September, the world will be watching and I’m excited to be part of it!”

Cape Town would be a good fit for the E1 in light of the City having successfully hosted a leg of the E-Prix in February 2023. The Mother City is also the leading South African metro in terms of electricity wheeling, allowing residents to buy privately generated renewable energy that is stored on the power grid.

Electric propulsion systems are a fast-growing feature of the maritime sector. Cape Town’s first electric commercial boat was recently deployed at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront
