Call to Action: SA boat builder input to SA National Standards Committee can unlock global waters

South Africa’s boatbuilding industry is a rising force in the global maritime economy, celebrated for its innovation, quality, and export potential. As international markets grow increasingly competitive and regulated, aligning with global standards has never been more vital. At the center of this effort is ISO Technical Committee 188 (ISO TC188) – the international body responsible for setting standards for recreational craft and marine propulsion systems.

For South African boatbuilders and related stakeholders, ISO TC188 is more than just a standards framework – it’s a strategic gateway to international markets and global credibility. By actively participating in this committee, South Africa ensures its marine industry remains competitive, compliant, and at the forefront of international best practice.

Why ISO TC188 Matters

ISO TC188 develops and maintains the technical standards that shape how small craft are built, powered, and maintained across the world. These include safety requirements, construction standards, environmental performance, and propulsion systems – all crucial components of compliance with major regulatory frameworks like the EU Recreational Craft Directive (RCD).

By aligning with these standards, South African boatbuilders benefit from:

  • Improved Market Access: Meeting ISO standards opens doors to export markets, especially in Europe and North America.
  • Enhanced Safety and Performance: Standardized technical benchmarks increase vessel reliability and user safety.
  • Accelerated Innovation: Involvement in standards development exposes local businesses to cutting-edge technologies and international trends.
  • Environmental Responsibility: ISO standards promote sustainability and support green transitions in boat design and manufacturing.

Local Leadership on a Global Stage

ISO TC188’s activities in South Africa are coordinated through the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), which leads the national committee. This committee provides a platform for South African stakeholders to participate in global standards development while ensuring local implementation is relevant and achievable.

The South African ISO TC 188 committee is currently chaired by Peter Jacops of Blue Peter Marine/IMCI, a well-known figure in maritime certification and survey. Committee meetings are hosted at the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), which also provides the technical secretariat, ensuring professional oversight and effective coordination.

The Power of Industry Input

For the committee to truly make an impact, it needs active participation and input from the South African boating industry. Standards are only as good as the expertise and feedback that shape them.

It is not enough to simply complain about a requirement in an international standard after it’s published – industry players must raise their concerns during the development and reviewing phase, providing practical, viable alternatives that reflect local conditions and experience.

To facilitate this dialogue, the committee has created a dedicated email address for stakeholders to submit feedback, questions, or suggestions regarding ISO standards: standards@samsa.org.za

You can also join the committee should you wish to play a more active role.

Your voice matters – and this is your direct channel to influence the standards that affect your business.

A Call to Action

The South African boatbuilding community is encouraged to engage with the ISO TC 188 South Africa committee and play an active role in shaping the standards that define our industry. Participation not only prepares businesses for compliance but gives them a voice in creating the rules that will govern their future.

As the international marine sector transitions toward cleaner technologies, smarter systems, and more stringent regulations, South Africa’s continued involvement in ISO TC188 is both a strategic necessity and a unique opportunity.

With this ISO TC 188 committee South Africa’s voice is heard in the global standards arena. But real progress depends on collaboration and shared responsibility. By contributing your insights and concerns to the national committee, you’re helping to secure the future of South Africa’s marine industry on the world stage.

Let’s not just follow the rules — let’s help write them.
