It took two massive cranes, a lot of planning, and most likely a few sleepless nights. But the long-awaited new luxury catamaran from Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing is off the hard at last, much to the delight of all who saw her impressive launch. The Du Toit Yacht Design beauty is a four-level sight to behold, now undergoing commissioning ahead of a formal introduction early next year when local industry stakeholders will get a better view. The new model has been years in development, but the end is in sight.

News of the launch prompted much enthusiasm on social media, particularly among local industry commentators and the launch partners themselves. “The Two Oceans 870 Power Catamaran is officially the largest catamaran by beam, air draft, and displacement ever to be transported on a public road and launched in South Africa—a groundbreaking achievement for all involved.” said Du Toit Yacht Design in a Facebook Post.

The launch team also involved staff from various departments within Transnet National Ports Authority. A custom-designed transport rig able to transport a catamaran of over 80 tons was created specifically by Teemane Cranes to carry the vessel from our factory to the quayside,” said Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing on their website. “The operation required the dismantling of port walls and fences to accommodate her size, with the final transfer into the water involving two cranes—a 440-ton and a 250-ton crane. The dedication of all involved ensured a seamless process, culminating in a successful launch,” the company said.

Superyacht Cape Town director Veda Pretorius said the launch underlined South Africa’s status as a ‘dominant force’ within the recreational multihull sector: “I can’t wait to sneak onboard during the sea trials to see her up-close”
