A possible ‘bromance’ between the most powerful man in South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, and the richest man in the world, Elon Musk, could have positive spinoffs for the maritime sector.
Starlink and SA are reportedly in discussion regarding the satellite service coming to SA, which is good news for boating stakeholders who would benefit from the improved connectivity the service offers.
“I have had discussions with him and have said, Elon, you’ve become so successful and you’re investing in a variety of countries, I want you to come home and invest here,” Ramaphosa reportedly told reporters in Pretoria.
Starlink has been conspicuous by its absence from the local market, particularly in light of Musk’s South African heritage – he was born and brought up in Pretoria. However its footprint is growing worldwide, including in Southern Africa. As from September the service is now available in Zimbabwe. Will South Africa be next? Watch this space.
