Cape Town’s mysterious superyacht tenant, Enigma XK, has sparked a popular guessing game at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront: Who owns it? And how long will it stay? The 72m vessel remains under arrest, at least so says a Cape Town High Court official.
To date there is still no clarity regarding the vessel’s ownership, or the reason for the lengthy delay at its berth outside the Cape Grace Hotel. Maritime sources talk of technical problems, as well as crew changes. One source spoke of a possible legal dispute between the owners and contractors involved with vessel repairs.
Despite the confusion one thing is clear: it has been a spectacular fall from grace for Enigma XK which in its heyday was one of the most celebrated superyachts in the world, winner of a World Superyacht Award after being converted from a patrol vessel into a yacht by Richards Shipyard in 2014. Her feature attractions include a cinema, gym, helipad, Jacuzzi and dive compressor.
