Onwards and upwards for RCYC’s Lindani Mchunu
We know what he can do in local waters. Now Lindani Mchunu will be able to export his magic abroad as the latest board member of the World Sailing Trust.
The Trust is an independent global charity set up by World Sailing in 2018, with the aim of promoting both sailing and environmental awareness. Lindani has already played a key role in promoting the sport locally via his role as RCYC’s Transformation and Diversity Committee member. He is also RCYC’s Sailing Academy manager.
Dee Caffari, World Sailing Trust Chair, said she believed Lindani would help World Sailing ‘future proof’ the sport: “I was inspired listening to Lindani in our Autumn Workshop on Gender and Geographic Diversity,” Caffari said in a statement. “He has seen our sport from a broad perspective, as an athlete, an instructor and a programme developer. There are not many challenges he has not found a way to overcome, so he will be able to challenge us all in our thinking and our approach. This is something I look forward to.”
“I am excited to work alongside Lindani especially as we take a cold hard look at where our sport is today through our recently launched Participation Study.”
Lindani, also a SABBEX board member, said sports development was deeply entwined with personal growth: “There is a subtle but powerful confidence that imbues an individual or a group, upon arriving in a space and identifying aspects of themselves represented, welcome and encouraged. This not only engenders the individual or group with a feeling of belonging but also inspires them to thrive,” he said.
