A much-needed maritime skills development programme has commenced in KwaZulu-Natal courtesy of the eThekwini Maritime Cluster. The EMC Work Readiness Programme is a partnership with Global Maritime Youth and the Durban University of Technology, aimed at graduate placement.

The Programme targets interns currently placed within the maritime industry. They spend a week acquiring soft skills to assist their career trajectories. One of their activities was a Port Tour with a delegation of Port officials. “The interns were granted the opportunity to drive around the Durban harbour and ask the captain onboard questions with regard to the activities that were taking place at the harbor,” EMC said in a news update on their website.

“One of the other reasons that the work readiness Programme was initiated is to help graduates acquire soft skills that will give them a competitive advantage in being absorbed by the industry after they complete serving their internship,” EMC said. “The Maritime Work Readiness Programme is implemented under the EMC Training and Skills Unit as one of the vehicles for carrying out capacitative training and skills interventions.”
