Over 25 500 small boats were officially surveyed in South Africa during 1 August 2015 and 31 July 2016, according to updated statistics from the South African Maritime Safety Authority’s Centre for Boating.
The total surveys for vessels under 25GT include both Local General Safety Certification (commercial) and Certificates of Fitness (leisure), and were conducted by Samsa’s internal and external surveyors.
Debbie James, Centre for Boating acting manager, said the total excluded some small non-powered vessels under 15hp which did not require surveys unless used for commercial operations.
Of the 25 500 + surveys, about 4500 were conducted by Samsa’s own surveyors. The South African Deep Sea Angling Association conducted over 7000 surveys, and SA Sailing just under 1000, with other implementing agencies making up the remainder.
